Product Description Amanda Tessler infiltrated the Society for the Preservation of Humanity to gather information to aid the “monsters” the organization seeks to cleanse from the earth. Her orders are to maintain her cover at any cost, but when the vampire she once loved is delivered to the facility, starved, blinded, and slated for further suffering in her lab, clinical detachment fails her.
An act of misguided loyalty lands Nathan Hilliard in the hands of an enemy bent on the extermination of his species and, perhaps more hazardous to his health, at the mercy of the woman he publicly humiliated six years ago. She has every reason to leave him there to rot, so setting him free must be a game to her, a subtler form of torture for him.
Despite his suspicions, his heart tells him the worst mistake he will ever make isn’t trusting her again, but letting her walk out of his life a second time…

If you liked Edward Cullen>>>>this hero/heroin story is for you. December 13, 2009 Teresa Pedersen (South Dakota-USA) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I downloaded this for the price while shopping quickly for some "on the road" reading.......
I never wanted to skip the potty stops more than while reading this novella!!!
Meet Amanda -she is smart, HUMAN(even at the tender age of 5! haha) She is quite young when she meets Nathaniel-a VAMPIRE that has charm, wit, intelligence beyond his 7 years of age. He choses not to use her for food and becomes her best friend & protector from other vamps---along with a -long term plan for their future together (too bad he didn't let her in on it)But had he done so....of course there would be no need for the story.............
Amanda and Nate are as close as best friends can be while growing up in a world of vampire/human existence. When, as a teenager Amanda is sent away to a European school for several years (to keep the nearly inseperable duo apart thru puberty) they continue their friendship thru e-mail and phone. At her arrival home to Nathaniels family New Years party-she professes her love with a kiss ---only to be mis-understood by Nathaniel and dejected in front of the vampire public-she quickly loses his "protection" from the other vampires. She has no choice but to enlist in his brother vampire Leo's agent operative to infiltrate the Society for Preservation of Humanity or SPH _an agency determined to rid the earth of vampires. She is undercover for 6 years (without any communication with Nathaniel) when his captured ----broken &-barely alive body is brought into her lab. When Leo won't do anything to rescue his brother Amanda sets aside her hurt and vengefull feelings to rescue Nate.Even if it means her own life if forfeit.
Their time spent eluding capture and their intimately -interactive conversations are what truely make this a very character driven story. Plenty of action adventure to satisfy the paranormal fix. It never overpowers the story underneath--it is actually very believable........
my only request would be for Kerry Allen to have made it way longer---the reason we vampire readers do love a good Stephenie Meyer book is 600 plus pages of story.....These two characters and this world would be a sure-fire hit with the GP in a 700 page a book (at least 4 book) trilogy..............
Thank you Kerry!!!!!
Good, fresh perspective May 22, 2009 C. Clever (Austin, TX) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Kerry really nails the essence of the vampire, tossing in a good dose of attitude and humanism with the story of a strong central heroine. This author has incomparable wit and talent, and I only expect more than perfect from her future releases. It's 80 cents. Just buy it, you'll not be disappointed.
A roaringly good must read novella May 24, 2009 Kathleen Gresham (Starkville, MS United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The wit and snark Allen provides in this novella is beyond entertaining. Usually I don't buy the emotional development in novellas because they're just so short, but Allen totally pulls it off in this one. She's got an appealing and engaging heroine and a sexy, fun hero. My only gripe was that it was too short! I wanted more story. A must read.

A Novella with Heart September 3, 2009 Tracy (Fort Myers, Florida, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Beyond the Darkening is a VERY good novella - quite possibly the best of that length I've ever read. There's a lot here that Kerry Allen could've made into a full-length paranormal romance (and still could at any time [hint...hint]), because her take on vampires and the world they inhabit is intriguing and TRULY fresh. My only serious complaint - though perhaps unfairly, I admit - and the only thing that keeps this being a full five star read for me is the length restricts the flow of good world-building and prevents a lot of development of character - and the romantic resolution seems rushed. I believe I read at the back of the kindle edition book that this was the first in a novella trilogy. I will be looking for those. 4.5 Stars overall and again, possibly the best Novella I've read at this length.
